Eight:48

Launched in 2010, Eight:48 is a newspaper for the design community. Breaking hard with the traditions of the format, it publishes every three months and boasts content and layout superior to most magazines. It is also printed on a stock quality most unseen in the newspaper world, a glimpse of permanence and hope for the (usually) utterly disposable medium. It will certainly baffle and bring envy on the subway.

Starting as a newspaper at magazine scale, the most recent issue has been upgraded to tabloid. Each issue features debate on a topic relevant to the current creative scene provided an ever-changing staff; this lends great diversity and motivates us to actually buy each issue.

The magazine's design is stunning; a good example of densely packed yet stylish. The highlight, featured on every cover and throughout, is gorgeous, new age illustration; these feature vibrant colours which display uniquely on stock, are very linearly geometric, and owe their aesthetic to the Illustrator interface (the idea to illustrate like this almost surely didn't come to mind before the advent of computers). The latest 07 edition focuses on the relationship between designers and the cities they live in. The work and process is illuminated by interviews, each designer offering a personal explanation of their city and how said city influences their work.
